My newest fashion doll sculpture, Haesoo
is coming as Azure Archer.
Like my former doll Dazzling Darjeeing which was inspired by oriental pottery
tea cup with Red tea in it,
I was inspired by oriental things especially traditional Korean things.
The major inspiration for this new doll was Netflix K-drama 'Kingdom' of which
background is Chosun period of Korea.
It's about a prince who fights with Zombies. Naturally they are wearing 'Hanbok',
Korean traditional costumes.
It's very new to us, People in Hanbok are fighting with Zombies.
I loved how they were shooting arrows in Hanbok.
So I wanted to make a Korean archer in Hanbok-inspired dress. The coat is based
on Hanbok Dopo(???), but I remade it as more modern one.
It has more modern shapes and pockets. but the separated sleeves are very
traditional.
And Korean dopo doesn't have the pattern on it, but I chose this beautiful
fabric for more feminine look.
Under the coat, she's wearing more western white dress. Chosun people loved
white clothes, so they used to be called as 'People of white(??????)'.
So its white dress is very like Korean, but its shape is western thing. So mixed
them together.
With coat, Haesoo is more Korean, but without coat, she looks more western. She
is also wearing a Gat, which is a kind of Korean traditional hats.
Chosun people were wearing so many kinds of hats and sometimes they showed their
social positions.
So western people saw it interesting and they called Chosun 'a country of hats'.
Gat is one of the best known Korean traditional hats. I was fascinated by an
archer in a gat in the drama. so it was basically begging of the inspiration.
Her hair is more western style. I was inspired by Elves that are described as
archers in many medias.
And Haesoo also has bow, arrows and arrow carrier in oriental pottery shape.
Haesoo is a beautiful archer.
So Haesoo is a little bit traditional, bit fantasy and bit modern. When I
finished this prototype,
I couldn??t release this because of other projects like exhibition things, and
during that time, Netflix released an animantion K-pop Demon Hunters,
which reminded me of this doll. With korean traditional stuffs with modern
things in fantasy. It was very interesting.
Anyway Haesoo is my new hero, whose main weapon is bow. She??s brave and
graceful.
Prototype shown on photos, actual dolls may vary slightly.
